Fat Tuesday

Happy Fat Tuesday everyone!

I’m not sure the raspberry paczek I had will get me through 40 days of no meat on Fridays but here we go. Lol - Lisa

Fat Tuesday

Happy Fat Tuesday!! Dan is giving up soda for lent. Not sure on what else is being given up but it won’t be an all-out ban on meat like in previous years. That was a real pain-in-the-ass lol. - Lisa

I was super excited to see that Ash Wednesday Mass was a full house, and even happier to see Parker put on a dress shirt and pants without even being asked. May your Lent be a time of reflection and prayer.

Our Lenten Sacrifice

This year for Lent, a big sacrifice: I gave up meat completely to show solidarity for Junie's identical pledge (we later amended her obligation to meatless M-W-F's only). Since Ash Wednesday was March 1st, that meant I went 46 days without consuming the flesh of a mammal or fowl, the longest such stretch - by 45 days - since I was on baby food. As I enjoy both vegetables and fish it was not nearly as painful as I feared, and there were only two days that were truly difficult. I had two small pieces of meat yesterday as Lent ended, but I didn't overdo it, and frankly, it wasn't that big of a thrill.

Unacceptable

We got fish from Culver's for lunch, and when we opened it up at home the potatoes were covered in chicken gravy that leaked all over the fish. It's a Friday. It's Lent. I'm Catholic. I called and complained and got nowhere. But hey, I'm sure they'd put pork all over a matzo ball and stonewall the complaints too. #YouLostMyBusiness #Culvers

Ash Wednesday

#TeamSlap attended seven a.m. Mass at St. Paul's this morning for Ash Wednesday. Because of a field trip, Lisa took LuLu to school midway through Mass, with the rest going in a bit tardy. After the service we lit a candle for my dear friend Fred Bryan, and included him in our petitions. #AshWednesday

Ash Wednesday

A reminder that life is short and should be lived to the fullest. Faithful: Get your ashes and have a blessed day!! If you're sitting it out? Please refrain from telling others they have a smudge on their forehead! - Lisa

Fat Tuesday

Greeted Fat Tuesday with donuts and crumb cake because the kids don't like paczki's. Lisa still bought some for us though, and I demand the kids buy them when they're adults. #tradition #culture

The Start of Lent

This morning we kept the kids home from school long enough to attend Ash Wednesday Mass as a family.

I took #TeamSlap back to our church for an all-you can eat Ash Wednesday fish fry, which also featured yummy baked cod.
It cost an arm and a leg, but that's what I get for breeding so often and besides, I assume the money went to help the church.
Note that Princess YaYa seems annoyed and dismissive of the camera, because at least one of them needs to play that role at all times. Off camera however, they were all good.
The bottom pictures feature Junie playing a game called "Is it broken?". In the game either Lisa or one of the kids holds up a French fry and you have to guess if it's one long one or two pieces deviously masked by their sleight of hand.

Mass and a Grumpy YaYa

Ash Wednesday Mass with Team Slap

Miss "I don't want my picture taken Dad. UGH, you're the worst Dad ever". AKA

Calm down YaYa. Your parents are your biggest fans. You will not understand for years...but someday you will. - Dale C

You can almost hear here thinking [que "Gone With the Wind" theme music] "as God is my witness, one day I'll put you in a home. - Fred Bryan

Still pretty even when pissed. - Lisa

Creating new starts, doing better. Realizing we're not here forever. Feeling remorseful/repenting... good messages, even if you don't go to mass today. I don't remember going to Ash Wednesday services growing up (mostly ev Lutheran church), but all these years raising Catholic kids has made me appreciate the message of Ash Wednesday. - Lisa
