Yup

I can watch and enjoy any sport, with the exception of outdoor soccer. I have tried, but it bores my very soul. - watching NCAA Track and Field

Now Batting, #23 . . .

With my classes over I got to see Grace play today. In her only at-bat she was hit by a pitch. She stole second, then advanced to third on a passed ball. When the third baseman mishandled the throw from the catcher "Amazing Grace" broke for home. It was a close play at the plate but she was safe! Great play, and I couldn't be any prouder! Great watching you YaYa!

They got the game in!

Somehow, hail and thunderstorms aside, YaYa's softball team got their game in. Due to the time limit, it actually ended with her at the plate and a full count.

A Theory

I've got a theory about why sports are so popular. Yes, following a team creates a regional identity, a sense of community loyalty, and gives you something to talk about over the water cooler. But: there's also an ingrained anti-intellectualism in our culture, and sports -with its detailed stats, its research, its strategy - gives us a chance to dive into academia without sacrificing that machismo.

Smiley - Track

Smiley is running a leg of the relay race here on the last day of track class (that's what the baton passing race is called, right?) Great weather for it.

update: Smiley is now doing the long jump on the other end of the track. Neat to watch. edit: he at first refused, saying he didn't want to get sand in his shoes lol

The Milwaukee Wave game pt 2

Smiley and I had a blast at the Wave game yesterday, thanks to tickets from Grandma Jeanne that put us in the first row of section 206, four rows from the field. Neither one of us has an affinity for soccer but this was a hoot.

It was an exciting game, even if it ended in a 10-9 loss to Syracuse. Afterwards we got the chance to walk on the field and get autographs too.

Here's Smiley ussing the flashlight they handed out as you entered the arena

The Milwaukee Wave!

I'm with the best son ever (even if he doesn't like selfies) at a Milwaukee Wave game at the Panther Arena! There was even a mascot soccer game during halftime lol!

A String of Comments Regarding this Horrendous Special Teams Travesty

Hey Russell, good thing you're pimping Obamacare on TV, since your passer rating needs some life support. #overrated

I expect this kind of behavior from the Brewers, but the Pack???

Pathetic. A Brewers quality collapse.

My reaction to the loss, while largely restrained (although I may have wished a fiery plane crash on the Seahawks), has still resulted in Lisa attempting to resurrect her ban on watching any sports in our home.

Watching the AFC championship game to find out who to root for in the Super Bowl. #AFChasmyvote #anyonebutSeattle

So, many of Seattle's ballyhooed "12" left the stadium early, thinking the loss was guaranteed. That says a lot about the quality of their bandwagon fan base. Then again, I'm jealous that they didn't have to watch that ridiculous collapse. #GoPats #stillpissed

Victory baby!

Was out at the grocery store with Lisa's step-mom when a stock boy broke the news of the Packers' win against the Cowboys. (It wasn't a catch Dez!!)

I take full credit, as today I wore a Packers shirt for the first time in my adult life.

You're welcome Wisconsin.

My mother-in-law paid Junie a buck to be quiet during the Packer game. "It was very hard, but I did it!" Junie proudly told me. LOL Classic!

LOL, she was so very good this weekend, but it was a Packer game...

The NASCAR death of Kevin Ward

Not a fan or huge expert on auto racing . . but I've seen the video of Kevin Ward's death and there's no way you can blame Tony Stewart. Ward exited his car, stomped down the middle of a live race track and appeared to have gone so far as to swerve *into* Stewart's car as it tried to avoid him. That's nuts. My thoughts are with Stewart as he deals with being sucked into such a tragedy.

Twitchy

Ack. Very twitchy again today. Can't sit still, can't concentrate; like a late in life, 48 hour onset of ADD. Maybe I'll head out for a walk or to the driving range . . .

Golfing

I was feeling twitchy today (still am) and so late in the evening I went down to the driving range and hit an 80 ball bucket. It's a nice way to work off some steam, and I can already tell that my game is improving.

Grouchy

I'm having a pretty crap*py day - if I was going to give details, you'd have read them by now - and to burn off some steam I hit the pavement and walked over to Socialist's house. From there we walked over to Goodwill to scope out some golf clubs for a starter set. I picked up a driver and a great golf bag, the latter being only $4.99. As this is my life we're talking about, the cashier initially refused to sell it to me, saying it was mistakenly marked and should have been either $14.99-$24.99. OFW lady, y'all wrote the tag, not me.. A nice driver and a great bag for just over $9 - a much better way to BLAAH than by shoving food down my throat.

Soccer and Boxing

Wow, the World Cup Finals in on the air, and at the half the score is . . . . 0-0. [crickets chirp]. What a tremendously exciting sport.

Update:

Rather than waste precious hours of my life watching a World Cup match that is 0-0 *at the completion of regular time* I fired up last nights Canelo-Lara bout. I scored it even up 114-114, with one round that really could have gone either way. The judges scored it 115-113 (one for Canelo, one for Lara), but the deciding score was a ridiculous 117-111 in Canelo's favor. That judge, IMHO, is on crack.

Boo

We watched California Chrome come up empty in his search for a Triple Crown . . . a colossal waste of TV time better spent watching "Vanilla Ice Goes Amish" (seriously: a great show. Watch it!) Still, it was *almost* worth it to watch the bitter rant Chrome's owner gave to NBC after the race.
