Gentle Family Dentistry in Kenosha

Last Tuesday, the 7th, I worked from home - or actually, from a study room in a local library. I had a Zoom hearing at 11, and during that I noticed that a toothache that had greeted me when I woke up, then subsided, was back. No problem, I finished the hearing and headed out for lunch at KFC. I bit into one fry - a french fry - and you'd have thought I bit into a live electrical line.

Ouch.

I'm pretty familar with tooth pain and thought I could tough it out until I could see my normal dentist.

That . . . was an overestimate of my chutzpah.

By late afternoon I began calling every dentist Google listed in or near our zip code, without luck, and then expanded my search. I finally found an "urgent dental clinic" that was willing to see me, and my insurance, as long as I also kicked in $165. Given the pain, I said yes.

Then, when I got there, they told me that was just to be seen. To have it extracted? That was another $1500 even after my two (not one!) dental insurances. To pay for this, they offered me the chance to sign up for their financing. They were, and are, the dental equivalent of a payday loan place. Morally, not a good look guys.

So it's almost 8pm and I'm just about out of hope. I stopped at Walgreens and bought some oral pain killer to rub on the tooth, but it didn't make a dent in the pain. I went back to Google, and on a whim pulled up dentists in Kenosha, where I work. In retrospect, my first call was the best choice I'd made all day.

That call was to Dr. Robert Salituro at Gentle Family Dentistry.

Keep in mind I was calling him from Milwaukee, That's 45 minutes away from his office, minimum. It was 8pm. He had never met me, didn't know me from Adam, and had every reason to tell me no thanks.

"Does it hurt a lot?" he asked, and I kinda think he was hoping I would say "no" and he could go home.

I told him it did.

"If you can get here in the next hour, I'll help you," he said.

But first, he asked me some medical questions, then told me he wanted to research a side effect of one of my medications before he would proceed. As promised, he looked into it, then called me back and gave me the go ahead to drive down.

I arrived at almost 9pm, but to his credit Dr. Salituro didn't rush the process. He took a more compressive history, took x-rays, and properly numbed the area (I've had a dentist pull a tooth when I wasn't fully numb, telling me "I'll be quick").

Whenever he caused me pain or discomfort, he apologized, and he made a strong effort to keep those apologies to a minimum. He prescribed me antibiotics, and looked for a 24 hr pharmacy near me in Milwaukee that could acccomodate the request.

Me? I tried to focus on the TV in the room, and the horrendous news coming out of LA and the fires tearing up the city there.

Here's what the offending tooth looked like:

This dentist rocked. If you have work you need done, look him up. You won't be sorry!

Smiley Had His Wisdom Teeth Removed

Smiley had all 4 wisdom teeth removed Friday. While he's resumed normal life (he worked a full 8 hours yesterday, and would have attended school today if not for the holiday) his face remains very swollen, and the dark bruising almost looks like a beard along his jaw. Thankfully the pain has been manageable, but I feel for the guy.

* * *

Lisa posted this a couple days back for Smiley:

Where can I find this, no time for deliver I need to pick it up, and having trouble finding
*** edit**** got a mail box drop off! Very appreciated, this is a game changer! Deluxe!
Available to go out on loan to anyone who is swollen, a wisdom teeth must!

Everything's Fine

I'm fighting a war on two fronts.  The hip has gone mad,  a mere day before a three mile charity walk,  and I've got a tooth that needs extraction. I've taken some pain pills but it tore my stomach up.   A real sticky wicket to start the weekend.

Still

A lousy day, of near epic proportions.  But - my teeth don't hurt. So it's still better than this Mon-Thursday. :)

Finally, it's gone!

It's done. I went to a private dentist this morning and was seen by a junior associate who chatted with me about law school. In the end not one but *two* teeth  were pulled, with the second one a surprise to all, but deemed necessary by the doc while I was in the chair. I objected b/c I was paying out of pocket and didn't want to double the charge.

"Shut up," ther dentist said.

"I'm serious, I don't have another $200 to spare -"

"Dan, SHUT UP before my boss hears. I'm going to pull it.. As long as he doesn't see it  we're good. If he does . . . whatever, it's done and you already have your receipt."

"Wow. Thank you."

"No problem. Marquette looks out for Marquette, you know?"

So apparently my exorbitant, soul crunching law school tuition has already done me *some* good in the world.

Agony

I waited nearly five hours at Marquette, and in the end they WOULDN'T pull the tooth, instead putting me on antibiotics and telling to get it yanked once the infection clears up. What $%##% B.S.

In Which Tooth Pain Makes Me an Ass

I've lost a crown and the tooth below is badly cracked - plus my gum is swelling and the pain is rather nasty. Naturally, I am having the run around with my insurance and I fear, in the end, I'll just wind up waiting in line at Marquette for emergency treatment. Spare me your 'helpful' comments suggesting this doctor or that, or this course of action instead of X - it's all crap, total crap, and all just the bitterest proof that the system is, as advertised, horribly flawed.

My Day

Lousy snow. The first of the season and I'm already wishing it was spring. Anyone who likes this stuff should check themselves in at County.

Anyway, I'm at Marquette School of Dentistry getting LuLu an exam.

Later:

Now shopping at Goodwill

180 Minutes at the Dentist

Lisa and I spent three hours of our day at the Marquette Dental Emergency Clinic while Lu had two teeth removed, the result of an infection that had spread to her jaw. Olivia's fine and literally dancing around, so please don't mollycoddle her by saying how awful it must have been. You know what was awful? Spending 3 hours of your day off reading six month old issue of Time and then paying for the whole shebang out of pocket. Cry for *me* Argentina, cry for *me*!

Junie Lost a Tooth

Last night Laurenzerz lost her first ever tooth, an event somewhat diminished both by her knowledge that we're the Tooth Fairy and the fact I didn't realize it was her first and so gave it only a brief to-do. We'll make up for that tonight :)

Smiley pulls his own tooth

In happier news . . . I also came home to find out that Smiley had lost his 'other' front tooth, this time by yanking it out himself. He was ungodly proud of his action and asked if this meant another gift from the Tooth Fairy (which he doesn't believe in). Seeing as I'd bought him a 10 episode DVD of both the original He-Man series and BraveStarr this morning, the answer was heck no.

The moral of the story: if you intend to perform surgery on yourself for profit, make sure someone's willing to foot the bill first.

Smiley Learns the Truth about the Tooth Fairy

Smiley just asked if the tooth fairy was real. I asked him if he wanted the truth, & he repeated the ?, as he's prone to do w/ his speech problems.

"I understood you, I want to know if u want the truth."

When he said he did I told him it wasn't real, and that I was the tooth fairy.

"Or Mom," he said, very serious. He thought for a second longer. "Mom is. Fairies are girls. "

Enuf

Yeah, I'm about done w/ this whole Tooth Fairy business. YaYa is complaining, again, that we're ignoring her recent 'loss'.

Whoopdeedoo.

I'm lost teeth in the last five years, and what did *I* get? A bunch of dentist bills and a hillbilly smile, thank you very much.

[seriously, give us a minute kid: we don't just put a buck under the pillow, we get an inexpensive but cool little gift. We just can't pull that out of a wallet.]

A Dentist Visit

I took the youngest three to the dentist today, a follow up to their appointment with Lisa a few weeks back.

Dramatic Much?

I bought Smiley a gumball from a quarter machine. He rejected it when I brought it home, pointing to his teeth and starting a fit. Ten minutes later I asked if we were cool. "na-uh," he said, patting his breast. "ooo bwoke my [h]eart".

Jeez lol

Nothing to Look Forward To

Heading off to bed. Lu had two teeth pulled yest evening, so I'm sure this morning will be a happy, joyous parenting experience.
