Trump Is Almost Assassinated

At 5:36 central time yesterday I was texting with my friend Tre when he sent this message:

Shots fired at Trump rally

I assumed it meant shots were fired outside a rally, not that it was an assassination attempt. I was quickly proved wrong.

A shooter, apparently perched nearby on a rooftop, opened fire on Trump mid-speech. The bullet grazed the side of his face and, it seems, took off a chunk of his ear. Secret service immediately surrounded the former President.

Sadly, someone in the crowd was hit and killed.

The would-be assassin was killed by the Secret Service.

The reaction in some circles was embarrassing and shortsighted; more than once I saw someone joking that the shooters aim "should have been better."

There is ZERO excuse for political violence in a country where the right to free speech, the right to protest, and the right to vote are ubiquitous.

This shooting was, and is, an embarrassment to our nation and to our ideals. I applaud the reaction of many politicians, on both sides of the aisle, including President Biden and WI's Democratic Gov and our Senators, in wishing Trump well and condemning the attack.

Tomorrow the RNC Convention begins here in Milwaukee. Security is already tight; I'm sure it just got a heck of a lot tighter, and I'm sure the Secret Service is going to have a short fuse. I pray there will be peace and that the political process continue without incident.

Meanwhile, this photo (I believe it to be taken by a NY Times photographer at the event), is making the rounds around the world. Whether you vote for Trump or not, the feelings it inspires are so powerful it overwhelms your senses. A former President, wounded and bleeding,  being escorted to safety but even in that awful moment stopping to signal to the crowd that he 'continues' - and in the background, an unblemished, undiminished, US Flag.

It truly invokes the power and resilience of our nation, and I think it's one of the best news photos I've seen in a very long time.

On January 6th

I posted the news articles yesterday (on FB) as placeholders, so that in the future they'd pop up in FB memories, and thus did not bother to caption them. I have not even read the comments, bc Idgaf about the wretched platform most days. I keep Facebook largely bc after a decade the sheer weight of material I've written precludes abandoning it. If I could go back in time, I'd avoid FB altogether and stick to my blog. Give me Instagram anyday.

But since some people chose to read into it, let me make my position clear. I think breaking into and occupying the capitol was stupid. I do not think it is worse than burning and looting cities all summer, but it isn't something to applaud. It was dumb and pointless and generated horrific attention. It gives America a black eye.

I think Trump, in decades hence, had the chance to have his administration objectively rated as successful by historians. I think his endless tantrum post election, and the incidents of Jan 6th, have irrevocably damaged those chances. He blew it.

You can think differently, it doesn't matter to me. You do you. If political thoughts decided a person's worth, I wouldn't associate with 90% of the people I know. Like what you do in the bedroom, politics has Jack to do with what I think of you. Just keep it civil and don't be an insensitive ahole.

That's all.

Thanks.

Election Results?

The longer an election remains undecided -- for any reason -- the more illegitimate both the process and the result appears.

That still necessitates a full and accurate count.

Not to rain on the celebration currently taking place in my living room,  but the media can't "declare" a President.  I'm sure Biden will triumph,  but recounts and court cases have yet 2b decided. This is just the MSM effectively marginalizing the opposition in the public's eyes.

I agree

Baseline protection and resources for all, but I agree - triage what resources we have and steer it to the places most affected.

You know the world's gone mad when my wife, Queen of Trump Haters, teared up during his press conference and said "He's doing a good job."

Hypocrites

THIS. 100% this. Have some integrity and acknowledge when your opinions are driven by partisan, not ethical reasons. Y'all didn't care when Obama was bombing and killing daily for 2 terms, but now a terrorist leader is eliminated by Trump and you're all Lennon & Ono? GTFO.  Hypocrites

Sketchy

The  White House "whistleblower' has allegedly been ID'd as Ned Price, a CIA officer who once published an anti-Trump op-ed in the Washington Post, and who admits he didn't actually hear the call to the Ukrainian President. Hmm. Seems like just the kind of objective, informed source with which to destroy a Republic in the name of political gain.
