The 2022 BVCC Food Pantry Walk

So today was the annual 2.6 mile charity walk for the local food pantry.  While we were regular attendees at the event for years, we skipped it 2019 (Lisa and the kids had free tickets for Great America), then 2020 went ixnay because of that whole pandemic, and I don't even remember it being held last year.

Anywho, this year's walk was discovered at pretty much the last minute so Lu, Junie, and Lisa were AWOL at work, my friend Tre couldn't make it on short notice, and Smiley is 24 hours removed from minor leg surgery so he had to sit it out. Boo.

But Yaya and her boyfriend showed, and I was pleased to bring our two exchange students along!

Along the route I saw a baby snapping turtle on the sidewalk and we stopped for some pics before I carried it over to the edge of a nearby pond.

Alas, twas not our most successful walk. It was a hot day, and newsflash for those of us new to having a shaved head:  hair insulates. It got mighty hot up top my noggin.

Then Dem, who had not brought sneakers to the US and was walking in boots (my bad for not noticing before the walk) began to complain of pain in his feet and was visibly uncomfortable. So I called Smiley who came to pick him up, and Rebeca asked to go too soooo... that was it.

None-the-less, I'm glad we did it and I want to return next year

The BVCC Food Pantry Charity Walk

We completed the annual 3 mile walk to benefit the local food pantry, but with one casualty: somewhere along the route LuLu  was exposed to an allergen and broke out in horrible hives, bad enough to warrant an ER visit halfway through the event. She's alright, thank God. Other than that, a splendid morning.

The BVCC Food Pantry Charity Walk

This morning #TeamSlap and the Wagners (along with Junie's friend Tia, YaYa's friend Bill, and our neighbor's dog Choco) completed the annual three mile walk to benefit the local food pantry. The walk raised just shy of $700 in cash for the charity, along with food donations. As we did last year, I had the kids each buy $5 worth of groceries, in addition to our financial gift, but unlike last year the weather was great. No rain this time!

BVCC Food Pantry Charity Walk

#TeamSlap just finished the annual 2.6 mile charity walk to benefit the Bay View Community Center Food Pantry. I almost overslept, if not for the intervention of Pam and Tre; suspiciously, my kids did not alert me to the time. Oh well, I'm sure it was a mistake and not because they wanted to skip it :). Afterwards. as always, BVCC treated everyone to ice cream.

The BVCC Food Pantry Walk

This morning my daughters and I took part in a charity walk benefiting the food bank at the local community center. It was the first real test of my knee since tearing my ACL three months ago, and I am pleased to report that there wasn't so much as a hint of pain :)

Junie lasted all of about .3 of a mile before throwing a fit, but luckily I had Lisa on standby and she drove and picked her up. YaYa, LuLu, and I finished the walk on our own, and had a nice entertaining conversation along the way. Then it was a nap, Mass, and soon dinner with friends here at home . . .

BVCC Food Pantry Charity Walk

I have some notion that I should try to install responsibility and empathy into the kids, and teach them to give back to the community. Rolling with this thought, I picked the fundraising walk for the Bay View Community Center's Food Pantry as our inaugural "family project".

Alas, Lisa had to fill in at work for her hospitalized friend so she couldn't attend. Then Lu had a fit and I left her behind (she reconsidered and joined me before the walk began), and I wisely viewed LK as too young to hoof a 3 mile course and dropped her off at grandma's.

I wish I could say it went well, but it was a comedy of errors. Turnout was pitifully low. There were maybe, MAYBE two dozen walkers, and we accounted for a sixth of the total. Then the kids argued, right there in public, tho' they knocked that off once the walk actually started. There was also a moment I'm sure we'll laugh about in twenty years, but since this isn't 2032 mum's the word. So A for effort, C for achievement. At least the Food Pantry got a bag of groceries and some cash from us; I hope they did better financially than the turnout indicated.
