How History Would Have Changed

In May of 1786 a farmer and his three young sons were planting corn on their farm in what was then western Virginia (now KY) when they were attacked by a party of Native Americans.
The father was killed instantly. The oldest boy, age 15, sent one of his brothers to get help from their neighbors, while he himself ran to their cabin for a rifle.
Now armed, the boy was alarmed to see his youngest brother, only 8 years old, being hunted by the war party. Taking aim at a silver pendant around a brave's neck, the boy shot and killed him, allowing his brother the time to escape.
It was a scene that was hardly unusual, occurring thousands of times over the course of this continent's history.
What makes it special is what happened 25 years later. That 8 year old, who so nearly vanished from history that day in VA, would honor the father he saw murdered by giving his own son his late father's name:

Abraham Lincoln.

On This Day

 On this date in 1844 a 12" gun on the USS Princeton exploded as the ship was sailing on the Potomac River, killing Secretary of State Abel P. Upshur, Navy Secretary Thomas W. Gilmer and several others, including David Gardiner, the father of Julia Gardiner. Because widower President John Tyler was infatuated with Julia, he was down below deck with all the ladies. Had the President not been with her, he would surely have been killed as well; and since he did not have a VP or an established line of succession, a Constitutional crisis would have erupted.

Where's The Lie?

For anyone who enjoys crafting or watching craft videos: are there any people to follow who do modern/boho/eclectic things? I miss crafting but all I ever see on my feed is cows, roosters, farmhouse, etc. That’s great if that’s your thing but I would love to see something different! - Lisa

30 Years

 Today marks 30 years since the ground campaign of Desert Storm began under the command of H Norman Schwartzkopf.

Iraq boasted an army of 1 million men, the 4th largest in the world, comprised of battle hardened veterans of a decade of war with Iran.
The inexperienced Coalition troops that opposed them numbered 750k.
Despite these facts, which had contemporary American pundits alarmed, the outcome was never in doubt. Within four days Kuwait was free and 42 of 50 Iraqi divisions lay in ruins, mauled by what has aptly been called the perfect example of B-krieg warfare.
To all who served, and to the late Gen Schwarzkopf and President HW Bush, I tip my hat in gratitude.

A Music Quiz

OK music lovers — here are the rules:

Answer each category with a SONG. No repeats and don’t use the internet. It’s tempting but try not to. Go with the first song that comes to mind, change the answers to your own (can’t steal mine). 😀
* Something to Wear - The sweater (Meryn Cadell)
* A Place - New York (Alicia Keys)
* Animal - Eye of the tiger (Survivor)
* A Number - It’s 2:00 in the morning (New kids on the block)
* A Color - Raspberry beret (Prince)
* A Girl’s Name - Billy Jean (Michael Jackson)
* A Boy’s Name - Jessie’s girl (Rick Springfield)
* Profession - The Pope (Meryn Cadell)
It’s harder than you think! Have fun! - LISA

Extra

It’s been a life long habit for me of searching for the perfect word or phase. Today when my mom asked for us to drop off decaf coffee I watched myself type out “brand preferences?” when I could have just said “what kind?”

It was around third grade when I raised my hand to ask the teacher how to spell the word “vocabulary” when Jolene called me out for the first time with the now infamous words, “just write reading words like everyone else!”
I am who I am, and that’s extra af - Lisa

Change

A co-worker turned friend took a new job today, a move she’s been afraid to make. Kinda symbolic starting preparations for a new job on the first day of Lent. I know she’s gonna do great, but I’m gonna miss her!

Been a day of feeling like I’m not where I need to be but the knowledge HE is looking out and will guide me to where I need to be WHEN I need to be there is keeping me putting one foot in front of the other.
Praying he preps everyone I care about to receive all the good things he has planned for us!

Smiley Had His Wisdom Teeth Removed

Smiley had all 4 wisdom teeth removed Friday. While he's resumed normal life (he worked a full 8 hours yesterday, and would have attended school today if not for the holiday) his face remains very swollen, and the dark bruising almost looks like a beard along his jaw. Thankfully the pain has been manageable, but I feel for the guy.

Lisa posted this a couple days back for Smiley:

Where can I find this, no time for deliver I need to pick it up, and having trouble finding
*** edit**** got a mail box drop off! Very appreciated, this is a game changer! Deluxe!

Update: I guess it's a "brushing" scam

By definition, ‘brushing’ is receiving an ordered merchandise to your home that you did not expect,” said Brian Ogelsby with Better Business Bureau.

The BBB says companies, usually foreign, third-party sellers are sending the items are simply using addresses they discovered online. Their intention is to make it appear as though you wrote a glowing online review of their merchandise, and that you are a verified buyer. They then post a fake, positive review to improve their products’ ratings, which means more sales for them. The payoff is highly profitable from their perspective.

A possible silver lining is that the government says you can keep whatever is sent.

Note that the lawyer was the hero

From the Forest Home Cemetery Facebook page

 In 1842, Clarissa and Samuel Brown became a part of the story of the Underground Railroad in Milwaukee. In July, Caroline Quarlls (in photo), a 16-year-old slave from Missouri, escaped from her mistress and made her way to Milwaukee. Upon arriving in the city, she gave a barber named Robert Titball $85 to hide her.

Secretly, Mr. Titball met with Attorney Horatio Wells in order to claim reward money. Instead of helping Titball, Wells contacted Attorney Asahel Finch Jr. who recognized that Caroline was in grave danger. He found Caroline and hid her along the banks of the Milwaukee River. After making some arrangements, Asahel Finch Jr. took Caroline to the farm of Samuel and Clarissa Brown, located between 17th and 20th and Fond du Lac Avenue.
It was Samuel Brown who took Caroline to Prairieville (Waukesha) hidden in the back of his wagon and to the home of abolitionist Lyman Goodnow. Caroline continued her journey with Goodnow through the Underground Railroad to Detroit and into Canada.
A historical marker is located on the corner of 17th and Fond du Lac Avenue that recognizes the involvement of Samuel and Clarissa Brown, the Underground Railroad, and the help given to Caroline Quarlls.
Samuel and Clarissa Hoyt Brown (Section 14), Horatio Wells (Section 27) and Asahel Finch Jr. (Section 19), are all buried at Forest Home Cemetery. Their simple markers do not reveal their wonderful story.

No Bill, We Aren't
