Fan Mail

I just received an email about the Pearl Harbor column. I hesitate to use the term "fan mail," but technically it *is* accurate.

Tuesday, December 6, 2016

I just got word from the editor: the Journal-Sentinel will be running my Pearl Harbor piece tomorrow.

FYI

With the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor coming up, I've written a column about my Great Uncle Leo, a survivor of the attack. I just submitted it to the Journal Sentinel, so wish me luck. It's been more than a year since I've been published.

In today's paper

I'm in today's Green Sheet (in the Journal-Sentinel) They chopped it up but they did give me a nice little blurb at the end. Pick up a copy please.

An upcoming column

Fair warning: it appears a column I wrote, or part of it, will be appearing in the Green Sheet of this Thursday's Journal-Sentinel. I say part of one because I really don't know what they're running, as the email said it would probably be trimmed for space and appear as part of a package. So, for all I know a tweet sized chunk may see print. Whatever. Buy a paper anyway; consider it payment for all the entertainment I provide you here free of charge. :)

Another Column Coming

Just got word from the Journal that a holiday column of mine will run in the week before Christmas. Quoting the editor "very nice column. As always, you have the perfect touch with these.". She's right. I do. And yet I remain ever so humble . . .

Another column

Yesterday the Journal called me on my break at work (sweet timing, since I would never have checked my voice mail) and asked me to get them a Paul Ryan piece by the end of the day. Done. The best part? I got paid to bash Nickelback in a national newspaper. Sa-weet! It's running in tomorrow's Journal-Sentinel.

Lance Armstrong

I'll have a column on Lance Armstrong running in the Journal-Sentinel later this week.

Well well

Tsk tsk. A state worker sent me an email blasting my column
*from her state email address *, presumably on work time. I then received two automated email notices from a state address indicating her attempts to abort the message, apparently ixnayed either by her side or by gmail. Thanks for spending tax payer $ to write a personal response to a community columnist in Milwaukee. Great way to back up your email claiming the reforms weren't needed.

Reader Reaction

Surprisingly, in lieu of the expected hate mail, my in-box has been swamped by well-wishers ranging from ex-teachers to bank vp's (gasp! A One Percent'er!). I've gotten more venom thrown at me when I wrote a column about the Hoan Bridge - I kid you not.

Wednesday, May 9, 2012

The Journal-Sentinel has officially asked me to stay on for a 5th year as a community columnist. I'm not *unhappy* about it, but I'm long past the point of being awed/excited about the news.

Monday, March 26, 2012

Whoa - big news: I wrote a piece about Romney, but instead of sending it to the Journal-Sentinel I decided it was time to be bold and try to get my name better known around the state. I submitted it to two newspapers. Today, the response: both(!) wish to print it, and the editor of one *will contact the other* to see who gets dibs. Hot dog!

Update: The Waukesha Freeman has told me they'll be printing my column tomorrow *if* the smaller paper agreed to hold off running it until after the Freeman published. That was still up in the air as of a couple of hours ago, so . . . I may be in the Freeman tomorrow. Or not. Take a look in the morning and let me know one way or the other.

Today's paper featured a letter to the editor defending my recent column.

A Response to my Column

This morning's Journal printed a response to my column by a Capt. in the Waukesha County Sheriff's Drug Unit. This evening I am pleased to see that his letter was skewered quite effectively by readers, all of whom seemed to recognize that his argument was . . . poorly thought out, to put it mildly. Your income directly depends on the continuation of this law, be it right or wrong; to me, that eliminates you as a reliable source of information on its validity.

Done

Just finished and sent off one of my columns. I'll get to the next one after work tomorrow. Off to bed.

Wednesday, December 7, 2011

The Journal-Sentinel just asked me to do an extended column for publication on Christmas Day. Quoting the email from the editor: "You seem to have a knack for writing holiday columns with just the right feel." Flattered and all, blah blah, but mighty sick of being good enough to be sought out for publication and yet never considered for regular work.
