Together Again

For six weeks our access to Angelcake's ashes were blocked by the placement of the Christmas tree in front of its shelf.  Now - finally - she and GusGus are reunited, as they should be.

RIP

Note: Originally GusGus was in the white urn, Angelcakes in the brown. That's what you see here. That made no sense, given Angelcakes was pure white and Gus a common mackerel tabby. So after this picture was taken at Lisa's wise direction, I switched their urn, which now better identify with the remains they hold.

RIP Angelcakes, our beloved kitty

Angelcakes entire life - minus her first few weeks on Earth - were documented here, on Slapinons. From the day we got here (September 15th, 2006) she was featured here.
In recent years, especially as YaYa moved out to college and then her own place, Angelcakes grew closer to Lisa. She would wait for her to go to bed (frankly, she'd sometimes *prompt* Lisa), then take her signature resting spot atop her Momma.

By Christmas 2020 I secretly feared the end was near, and so we included the pets on our annual Christmas card. By spring her vet visits had increased in frequency, and by the end she was so weak  I was trying to feed her oral syringes of milk and the juice from tuna cans. It was time to let her go.

With Covid stil prevalent, pet owners were only allowed in for end of life procedures. At the end, it was YaYa, Lisa, and I with her at the veterinarian's office. We held Angelcakes, we petted her, and we cried as her life slipped away.

She loved a lot, and she was loved in return. We still miss you Angel. RIP

My 15 year old cat Angel, who loves me more than anyone ever has and more than I deserve had been to the vet a few times recently and costing us money we can afford to lose.

Man I hope God let’s me keep her a few more years - Lisa

Huckleberry is Adjusting

If I had to place a bet, I think GusGus and Huckleberry will be good friends (although he did chase Gus for a second last night - but they've bumped noses too.) So far Custard has remained aloof but unafraid, once or twice walking right up to him. Angelcakes is openly contemptuous but has not hid or cried, so fingers crossed.

He is agreeable to the leash only about a fifth of the time and has had accidents in the house, but he's already improving in both regards.

He gets along well with the kids and Lisa, and spent the afternoon with us in the car while we ran errands. He seems cautious around me and sometimes fearful. I think my size and volume remind him of some bad times in the past (he was skin and bones and terribly meek at the pound.) But we will move past that lickety split.

#GusGus. #Huckleberry

Oh, and as you may have noticed by the affinity for boxes apparently we done adopted another cat.

Help us find Angelcakes

Our all white cat Angelcakes is missing, although she may be hiding in the house if you see her in bay view, please let me know

UPDATE: Angelcakes has been found, sauntering into the kitchen from God knows where and then reacting with disdain when we showered her with affection.

Progress

The first signs of détente - the two girl cats were asleep on the same bed when I walked in.

In Which GusGus and Angel attempt a Breakout

Both cats object to the brand of cat food I bought recently and have turned feral, trying to grab table scraps and on lieu of that going on a hunger strike. Fine with me, ya picky buggers. BUT, they both bolted out the back door today and ran off. I found Angelcakes in the backyard but GusGus wandered into the neighbors yard. I had to corral him for a bit, and when it came down to it here was the pivotal moment:

I was behind the shed alongside the porch when he appeared again on our porch.
Seeing me he was ready to bolt, and so I acted immediately, vaulting up and over the side of the porch in a feat of athletic derring-do that I would judge impossible for a man my size. GusGus seemed equally stunned, and I got the $^#@  in my arms and back inside. Unfortunately, now every muscle in my body - all 8 of them - ache.

And yes, I surrendered and bought them their normal fare.
