The Harley Davidson Museum

Laura, our exchange student, had expressed interest in seeing the Harley-Davidson museum here in Milwaukee, so I picked up a free family pass from the library and (after the doggo diversion) Lisa, Laura, Junie, Bella, and I headed on down to the museum.

Harley's are pretty ubiquitous here in the company's hometown, but this was our first visit to the museum. It was much nicer than I expected, featuring clean industrial lines, well thought out exhibit spaces, and a diverse collection of Harley related items.

I'm not going to lie. While I appreciate a motorcycle, seeing a few hundred at the same time make me empathize for all the times I've dragged people to the bookstore - if you've seen one X, you've seen them all.

But then again, it was hard not to appreciate a beauty like this:

Of interest: the original "factory" was just a shed built in the backyard on 37th and Highland, a short walk from our kids' school.  As mentioned on the placard, an illuminated border on the exhibit floor shows you just how small that initial building was in 1903.

I own a cast iron motorcycle toy much like the one in the top left of this picture:

At one point the girls designed their own bikes:

This is a cycle that washed away from Japan during the tsunami and showed up on the beaches of western Canada. At the owner's request, it was unrestored and donated to the museum.

Then there was an area you could pose on bikes like you were rolling down the road yourself:

When you visit Milwaukee, make time to check out the Harley museum!

My Thoughts - The Milwaukee Public Musuem

Repairs are needed, but I'm conscious of the deliberate portrayal of their woes that the Milwaukee Public Museum is crafting in the media. They want a new, smaller, building, and they're in full spin mode to get it. 100 million in (alleged) deferred maintenance does not somehow make a quarter billion dollar move justifiable. My vote is NO.

Team Slap visits the Milwaukee Public Museum August 15, 2016

Earlier this summer Junie and I won tickets to the Milwaukee Public Museum by kicking butt at a scavenger hunt. Although the Museum bores me to tears - I could draw a map of the exhibits, they've changed so little over the years - we made a day trip out of it on Monday. Here's Junie's "to do" list.

Junie rode with YaYa and her boyfriend, and YaYa noted the lil one bickered with him like an old married couple.

The Streets of Old Milwaukee are newly renovated. Despite some improvements, and a ton of hype, I don't think the changes were all that impactful or grand.

The kids, naturally, enjoyed the general store.

This guy was modeled on my best friend's Grandpa.

The Nickelodeon was much improved tho'.

As LuLu articulately pointed out, there's too much science and not enough history at MPM. It's not a Natural Science museum. I was glad to see they had a (small) weaponry display.

I will say, their butterfly room continues to impress, although it is smaller than I remember.

This photo was the end of the good times. From this point forward, every kid, other than Junie, had a hissy fit or, in YaYa's case, fought with her boyfriend. Such blends of misery and joy are common for families, and something that both appalls the childless and cripples folks who by nature are not parental. The trick is to take the good times as an appropriate payment for the day, and not let the bad moments wipe out your memories. Frankly, and I'm not exaggerating, the anger I had at the last half of the day is already fading from my recollection of the trip.

By the time we went out for lunch - minus Smiley, whose fit led us to drop him at home - all was well again. We had a good time, and Smiley was happy with the to-go we brought home for him.

I have promised Junie, btw, that we will return alone again soon, so she can see everything she missed. It will not be super exciting for me, LOL, but what the heck!
