In case you haven't been paying attention: with A-Rod back on the field the Yanks have surged. They've won 5 straight and are now only 3.5 games out of a wild card spot. This, despite being declared dead in the water pre-Arod. Rodriguez, btw, was 0-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored yesterday

I should also mention that they've won 11 of 14 since his return. A-Rod I bow to thee!

Johnny Damon Can Go Take a Flying Leap

The Idiot Otherwise Known As Johnny Damon says his 2009 World Series ring is "diminished" for him if it turns out A-Rod was using PED's at the time. In related news, he's giving back his 2004 Red Sox ring since David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez and who knows how many other BoSox were 'roided to the nines at the time. $%# moron.

Yankee Curtis Granderson is out 10 weeks with fractured forearm suffered on a HBP. Damn.

And a court has ruled that the New York Yankees are "The Evil Empire" - at least when it comes to using that phrase in merchandising. Quoting the Wall Street Journal "The panel of judges sided with the Yankees, ruling that the Yankees are strongly associated with the phrase. Allowing anyone else to use the phrase exclusively would likely cause confusion, ruled the judges." You go boyz!

40 Years Ago Today

40 years ago today George Steinbrenner bought my beloved Yankees and within 3 years returned them to October ball. RIP sir, you did the universe proud.

Congratulations to the Brewers on notching a second consecutive winning season - an impressive accomplishment, given that they were 12 games under .500 with only 42 games left on the schedule. IIRC they had a similar surge to finish off a Trebelhorn year, back in '87 or '89. In other baseball news, my Yanks are back alone in first with two to play, congrats to the Tigers and Prince on clinching the Central, and to the Nationals for their first ever division title. Well done all.

Derek Jeter is exactly 1000 hits shy of Pete Rose's all time hit record. He's 38 and has one more year on his contract with a club option for '14. Your thoughts on the odds of him taking the title eventually?

17 years ago today Mickey Mantle passed away. My clearest memory of him: an appearance he made on the Home Shopping Network or QVC in his final years, talking about his career and his alcohol problems while hawking memorabilia.
