My Boxing Predictions

I'm excited to enjoy two great weekends of boxing! Klitschko defends his heavyweight title this weekend, while Floyd Mayweather takes the stage May 3rd. My money's on both of them retaining their belts. Meanwhile I had the pleasure to watch another Errol Spence Jr fight today, and I continue to predict big things for his future. He's got power, talent, an Olympic pedigree, and a calm, professional demeanor. He's a joy to watch.

Pacquiao v Bradley

I'm disgusted that Manny Pacquiao got a UD versus Tim Bradley. Yeah, I watched the fight, and I agree Pacquiao deserved the win on points, but he was throwing powderpuff shots and missing a ton. Bradley lost mainly because he let Manny win rounds on the benefit of the doubt. Let's not confuse this with a great performance, and the lopsided scorecards are, IMO, a joke. Plus Larry Merchant did the commentary, he of the ever present depressing cynicism, and that nearly ruined it from the start. Blech.

Three days later, and I'm still genuinely upset that Tomasz Adamek lost a decision to Vyacheslav Glazkov. Glazkov deserved the win, since he owned nearly every round, but it's tough to see Tomasz Adamek drop to 49-3 and descend in the rankings.

Angulo-Lara

I watched the Angulo-Lara fight tonight, and it was an entertaining and eve boxing match. I also watched Ali-Liston I, and whatever happened in their rematch (*cough*fix*cough) Ali was punishing Sonny from the start in this one, and IMO he quit just to avoid visiting the canvas.

He's Gonna Be a Champion. Mark My Words.

Wanna see a future welterweight champion as he claws his way to the top? Go YouTube 2012 Olympian Errol Spence Jr. He is a joy to watch.

Yowsers

Smiley may never box, and God willing he avoids street fights, but let me tell you *that boy can PUNCH!* I was working on the bag when he put on his gloves. He stepped in and barraged it with some combinations, then ripped into it with hooks that would rattle any ribcage. Mein Gott, he's got some power for his age.

A Night of Boxing

Just watched Sergey Kovalev KO Ishmayal Sillakh 52 seconds into the second round . . . wow, that was impressive. Kovalev packs a thunderous punch for a light heavyweight.

update: I just finished watching the main event, the Adonis Stevenson/Tony Bellew fight. Stevenson has freaky power, it's true; but to my eyes (and I'm just a fan, not an expert) he seems very one dimensional in the ring. If he matches up against Kovalev - and from Stevenson's comments, Adonis is ducking that fight - I'd bet on Kovalev.

A Day of TV

Watching "Dogfights" on  the DVR, this time "The Last Gunfighter", an episode about Crusader dogfights over North Vietnam. Great show, superb graphics!

UPDATE: I'm now typing up class notes and watching Ali-Frazier ("The Thrilla in Manilla") on U-Verse on Demand

Done with classwork, and the Ali-Frazier fight. Great bout, shame about the TKO; I kept hoping the ending would be different LOL

Ken Norton

Boxer Ken Norton, a heavyweight champion that beat Ali and has a connection to my father-in-law (Dennis was a sparring partner), died today. He was 70. RIP

Congrats!

Belated congrats to Floyd Mayweather on schooling Canelo Saturday night. :) I was working but followed it round by round on the internet.

Mayweather-Canelo

Oooeee, I can't wait for the Mayweather-Canelo bout tonight! I wish I wasn't working - and had the $ for the pay per view - so I could watch it live. I hope Floyd puts that ginger on the canvas, but no matter how he does it, Mayweather walks out 45-0.

Joe Frazier

RIP "Smokin" Joe Frazier, heavyweight champion of the world and Ali's greatest foe.
