David Sanborn

Saxophonist David Sanborn, one of the greats of the instrument and a rare "mainstream name" in Smooth Jazz, has died at age 78.

A childhood survivor of polio, Sanborn took up the sax at the recommendation of his doctor, looking to help his damaged lungs. He would go on to a six decade long career in music, and working far beyond the labels attached to his style.

He performed at Woodstock; played iconic roles on Springsteen and Bowie albums, toured with Stevie Wonder, and along the way put out a discography of jazz that left an indelible mark on the genre.

RIP
