Fantasy Football

And notch the W . . a fine ending to a long night of fantasy football. :)

My Fantasy Football Draft, 2009

Socialist invited (coerced me really) into taking the last slot in a fantasy football league his buddy Luke is running. We were supposed to draft over the weekend but the commish f*ed it up, and so the dirty deed was completed last night, just in time to conflict with the Jon Gosselin interview on ABC.

It was an online Yahoo live draft in serpentine fashion, and as normal I got stuck in the middle of the selection order.

I started out ok, grabbing Larry Fitzgerald and Marion Barber with my first two picks. With the third round QB's started disappearing from the board, and I grabbed Packer Aaron Rodgers. I wanted him for his numbers, but I also think it's important to keep at least one hometown player on your squad. Karmic loyalty and all that. I then picked Ronnie Brown and Antonio Bryant, and realized a problem. Both my RB's have the same bye week. That's sloppy research on my part, but hey, I spent all of 15 minutes prepping for this thing.

That meant I was going to need to load up on RB's on my bench, as they are hard to come by on the trading table. While I knew he was going to miss some weeks, I figured Marshawn Lynch was the best of who was still on the board. Then I went and screwed up again. I'm glad I picked up Santana Moss at WR, but that meant that two of my three starting wideouts had the same bye week. C'mon! About time I learned how to find the 'bye' category on the draft stat page, eh?

In the next round defences were the big thing, and I grabbed Tennessee. Then - AGAIN - a bye week fiasco. I picked up Jay Cutler, who shares the same bye week as Rodgers. Shoot me. Shoot me now.

I chose Longwell and Zach Miller to finish off my team minimums, then concentrated on repairing the damage I'd done to my own chances.

I grabbed Miami's D as a backup, then picked up TD specialist 'Tim Hightower at RB. After selecting Winslow as backup TE, I grabbed Isaac Bruce as an alternative at WR. I'll still have to sit leave one WR slot empty during that massive bye week, but it's better than sacrificing the points rich RB slot.

With the last pick of my draft I faced a quandry. I had no backup kicker, but still needed to work out the QB bye. I chose Chad Pennington, adding a third QB to my roster, with the idea I can trade one of them after the bye and pick up a kicker for one week if need be.

I think it's a solid enough roster, but sloppily compiled. That bye week really messed with my plans, and I've got no one to blame but myself. Oh, and Socialist for tossing this in my lap at the last minute.

Wish me luck!

Fantasy Football - the misery continues

Yup. 3-7. 9th place in a ten team league.

I suck.

At least this past week I lost to the league leader 'Juicy Beavers'.

For the record, I think the OT scenarios in the NFL suck. Sudden death is stupid, ties are stupid. Play a quarter free-for-all, and if at the end you're still tied then give both teams a single down to drive in a TD from the 1 yard line. No score after all that, then go ahead and declare a tie.

* * * *
Regarding the disputed SD-Pit game (which I did watch): give me a break. The only people upset with the outcome are gamblers, and I'm sick of it. I thought it was pretty classless (although legal) to run in the TD in the first place when the game was over and it meant nothing.

Then to call it a TD, reverse it, announce you think you were wrong by reversing it, and then, THEN follow up with a notion to increase instant replay even more as a result, well that's just smarmy.

Did they or did they not cover the spread SHOULD NEVER BE A CONCERN, VOCALIZED OR INTERNALIZED, OF ANY NFL OFFICIAL ON THE FIELD OR BEHIND A MAHOGANY DESK.

* * *

Aaron Rodgers looked solid this weekend. Here's hoping for more of the same next week.

'Wide right' again in Buffalo. What a crappy game. Cleveland - Buffalo is a good reason why the NFL should retain the power to alter the schedule in-season to ensure marquee matchups for their big timeslots.

Fantasy Football Weeks 7 and 8 (NFL Week 8 & 9)

Well, fiddle dee dee. I went into Monday's tepid Washington/Pittsurgh game needing under ten points to win, with both Hines Ward and Santana Moss lining up for me. Ward came within feet of a TD, but in the end . ..nada. I lose - again - and fall to 4-5.

[note: great Texas - Texas Tech game over the weekend. I was on my feet cheering when Tech struck with a single second left]

I've got to get a more competitive RB package going, although I admit that will be hard to do this late in the season. I dropped Fred Taylor (damn your low point totals sir!) and picked up Derrick Ward, but that won't exactly light up the night.

So I'm 3-5 and in 8th place. Ouch.

Fantasy Football Week 6 (NFL Week 7)

Well I just flat out got creamed this week. Pathetic, but part of me doesn't mind. The Colts - and I was playing Manning and Harrison - were stomped by the Pack this week. The fun I had watching that perfectly executed game was worth the loss. Unless it costs me a playoff berth, natch.

So I'll fall back to .500 at 3-3. That SUCKS, but whatever. Next Sunday is another day Rhett, and I intend to finish it at 4-3.

Fantasy Football Week 5 (NFL week 6)

Whoohoo! Going into Monday night I was fifteen points behind my buddy, known around here as Socialist. But in a taste of what's to come on Election Day the 'Publican rose to the challenge and smoked the liberal, spanking him by more than 30 electoral votes, er, fantasy points :)

[Much obliged to the cast and crew of the Cleveland Browns. I know I've pis*ed and moaned about how you've let me down in the first four games, but I forgive you - as long as you keep up the monster point totals.]

The win brings me to 3-2 and fifth place in the league, well within striking distance of a playoff berth (which, granted, is month's away). Next up, one of the strongest teams in the league, the L-Train.

On a more serious note, a recent poll gave Obama a 17 point lead here in Wisconsin. Wisconsin's vote totals will always hinge on two areas - Madison, a hopeless hotbed of the Left, and Milwaukee. Majority rules, I know, but something about Milwaukee's vote troubles me.

I've mentioned before how my hometown is exclusively the right of one party, and always has been. We were run by the Socialist Party until the late 1940's, when the Democrats took the reigns. Top to bottom the city is run by Democrats and has been for sixty years, with many running unopposed for office.

I believe a monopoly of that magnitude is anathema for a republic, and I would say the same if the Republicans had the same stranglehold. There is no truly original thought, no incentive for honest improvement, no competition to spur progress. You may point to cities which consistently vote Republican and hold them up as a counterexample - off the top of my head, perhaps Dallas or Austin, although I honestly don't know - but I will bet you there's some odd duck Democrat that sneaks into office there every decade or so.

[oh, the Milwaukee County Exec is a Republican, which defies all odds, but he was originally carried in by the suburban vote, and even then only on the heels of a corrupt and disgraced Dem. administration]

People here vote for local offices out of pure habit and tradition, and with rare exception that carries over into the Presidential vote. The idea that our herd mentality translates into carrying Wisconsin and thus potentially changing the course of the nation's future . .well, that annoys the hell out of me. Milwaukee would probably embrace Obama even if (gasp!) a two-party system existed here. Well and good if they did.

But that should at least be an actual *decision* and not just a habit we picked up from our grandparents, no?

Fantasy Football Week 4 (NFL week 5) and Baseball Predictions

Well I squeaked out a five point victory in my fantasy football league, bringing me to an even 2-2 record and sixth place in the league. A nice improvement, sure, but I still only racked up seventy lousy points. Yikes.

* * *

Note that Aaron Rodgers did what I predicted and played through the pain rather than give in to the crazy pro-Favre propaganda in Wisconsin. It was a gritty performance marred by a costly interception, which if nothing else should bring back fond memories of the Favre era for those blowhards.

* * * *

My baseball predictions:

Dodgers vs. Philly = L.A. in five games.

Boston vs. Tampa Bay = oh, this breaks my heart. As a Yankee fan I've always despised the Red Sox but I think they're a damn tough team and will be hard to stop this year. Boston in six, although I hope I'm wrong.

The Series (I reserve the right to re-pick if the teams change). LA over Boston in five games, largely as a fluke.

* * * *

Anyhow, here's how my fantasy football team scored this past week.

Fantasy Football Week 3/NFL Week 4 I'm now 1-2

I've gone ahead and established a slapinions site at blogspot. I'm going to spend the next few days/weeks making it pretty and whatnot. After that, when it's ready to my satisfaction I'm going to unveil the address in a completely dramatic and unnecessary fashion :)

I will say there *seems* to be a decent selection of bells and whistles to choose from over there so in the end this all might be for the best.

* * * *
I lost in my fantasy football league for the second time, largely due to Laveraunes Coles (Jets) ungodly 3 TD performance for the bad guys and Brian Griese's return to form (read: sucky) for me.

What's worse my consistently low point total has dropped me to the bottom of the pack in my ten team league. Things HAVE to improve. At least Cleveland managed to score for me . . but of course now they're on bye ;)

* * * *

It's sickening how many supposed Packer 'fans' have cheered Rodgers injury and used Favre's wupping of Cardinals to resume the same ol' blame game.

Either you're a Packer fan or you're a Favre fan. If you're the latter, shaddup and move to NY or Mississippi and save my ears. Favre  is a great QB but he won't find many teams as pathetic/apathetic as Arizona was this past week. Heck, the readers of this blog could've teamed up for a TD pass or two against them.

My Slapinion: Rodgers will play this week even if his shoulder falls off. Politically, it's his only chance for survival in this Favre obsessed state.

Fantasy Football Week Two (NFL Week 3): Slapjacks Win!

Well I finally got a win in my fantasy football league, making me 1-1 on the season, but I still didn't crack the century mark in weekly points. My overall lack of points means I place seventh in the league standings. I have to pick up the pace if I want to be in the running for a playoff berth.

I continue to worry about the lack of production in Cleveland. That's gonna be a problem for me as the year wears on.

Next week Seattle is on bye so San Diego resumes defensive duties for me. I also realized *both* Manning brothers are on bye in Week Four  (what the heck, do the Mannings have a barmitzva that weekend or what?) so I dropped Adrian Peterson (Chi - RB) and picked up Tampa's Brian Griese. TB plays Green Bay next week but with Al Harris out with a ruptured spleen the Pack's secondary should be ripe for exploitation.

Or not.

It's not like I'll be rooting against the Pack. I'm hoping for 200 yards, a TD and a pick out of Griese, nothing more.

Oh, by the way a big thank you to Chicago's defense for coughing up the game to Tampa Bay on Sunday. Pinning them down at their own goal and then granting them an automatic first down via a personal foul? Priceless. I knew Green Bay would probably fall to Dallas and the Chicago loss kept us firmly in first place in the NFC North. I was as cheerful as a electrolysis tech when Bea Arthur walks in the door.

Now on to Week Four . . .

Fantasy Football - NFL Week 2

This was the first week of our fantasy football league, week one having passed us by because of the Thursday night game that preceded our draft.

I started Eli Manning over his brother, not fully believing Peyton had shaken off all the cobwebs. Good call that one. Not so my choice to start the San Diego defense, may their incompetent souls rot in hades.

Santana Moss gave me the only 'great' performance of the week and I needed it to even make the game a close one, since my running backs seemed to sleep through most of Sunday.

Going into the Monday night game I had a twelve point lead but my opponent, The Juicy Beavers, had Dallas' D on their active roster. [note: you'll note a trend among the names of many of the fantasy teams I play against. Don't blame me folks, I didn't pick 'em.]

I watched the Monday night game and did a victory dance once Philly passed 35 points. Our league uses negative points, and if a defense gives up that magic 35, see ya - automatic ten point deduction. The game was mine!

Except this morning I found out I lost by .23 points. Point two three points. At eight in the morning I called the Socialist, aka the Commish, to good naturedly(sp?) complain that I was slighted. No way, no way did the Dallas D rack up 12 points. They had only five sacks (1.5 points) a fumble recovery (three points) and one special teams TD (8 points). Subtract ten from that and you don't score twelve points, I know that much.

Twelve hours later he called me back. He had been confused too and questioned the total. It turns out a D is *not* penalized for any points scored directly off of turnovers. It makes a certain amount of sense, since the D isn't on the field to stop a safety from running in an interception, but it's still horse hockey.

Sweet niblets, what does a man have to do to earn a win in this league?

Answer: I could try breaking the century  mark. That'd help. LOL.
