Jerry Lee Lewis

For the second time this week (the first being a hoax) Jerry Lee Lewis has died. The rock 'n roll pioneer and rebel was 87.

It's that "rebel" label that sticks in my head when I think of Lewis. He was far too out there for '50's audiences, no question. And let's be real, some of his choices would get the same response from society today - deservedly so.

It's a shame he couldn't have traveled a smoother path, because I think all that bs cost him a career of unimaginable heights.

RIP

Singles turns 30

.

Today marks 30 years – THIRTY YEARS – since the release of the Singles soundtrack.

Putting aside the impossibility of such a statement, it’s hard to find words to describe the importance of this album to me.

It is one of the ten records I’d take with me on a deserted island. Other than Nirvana, it features all the major players of the grunge era, and more. It was one of the first group of CD’s I bought with my “introductory offer” at Columbia House Records and Tape. Most importantly, for a young fan eager to prove the band he was passionate about wasn’t a one and done fluke, there were two mighty, glorious new Pearl Jam songs.

Hearing Breathe and State of Love and Trust was all the proof I needed.

Happy Birthday Singles soundtrack. May you be played forever.

Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone by Ethel Waters

I used Shazam to discover Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone by Ethel Waters

Years we've been together
Seems we can't get along,
No matter what I do
I don't appeal to you
Makes no difference whether
I am right or wrong
If we can't be sweethearts
This much you can do
Oh, Honey, though our friendship ceases from now on
And listen, if you can't say anything real nice
t's better not to talk at all, that's my advice
We're parting, you go your way, I'll go mine
It's best that we do
Here's a kiss, I hope that this brings lots of luck to you
Makes no difference how I carry on
Just remember Please don't talk about me when I'm gone.

Our Huck

Said anyone ever mad at anyone in Team Slap:

A-B-C-D-E, F-U
And your mom and your sister and your job
And your broke-ass car and that shit you call art
Fuck you and your friends that I'll never see again
EVERYBODY BUT YOUR DOG
you can all fuck off
(Even our craigslist couch) lmao
But no one dislikes Huckleberry no matter what!!!!!
****Although he did eat 4 full boxes of girl scout cookies while left alone yesterday!!!! - Lisa

A Music Quiz

OK music lovers — here are the rules:

Answer each category with a SONG. No repeats and don’t use the internet. It’s tempting but try not to. Go with the first song that comes to mind, change the answers to your own (can’t steal mine). 😀
* Something to Wear - The sweater (Meryn Cadell)
* A Place - New York (Alicia Keys)
* Animal - Eye of the tiger (Survivor)
* A Number - It’s 2:00 in the morning (New kids on the block)
* A Color - Raspberry beret (Prince)
* A Girl’s Name - Billy Jean (Michael Jackson)
* A Boy’s Name - Jessie’s girl (Rick Springfield)
* Profession - The Pope (Meryn Cadell)
It’s harder than you think! Have fun! - LISA

Little Sally Walker

So I guess Iggy Azalea released a song called “little sally walker” last year...I was like, hmmm that’s a game we used to play as kids....

Yep, it’s the same song. Lol.
You guys remember playing this right?
We so damn old our old games are being made into new rap songs. How tf that happen?! - Lisa

The Gits

The Gits is a melancholy documentary about the titular Seattle band whose rise through the industry ended tragically with the brutal rape and murder of lead singer Mia Zapata. It's not a very feel good story,  but it's one that deserves telling,  and I'm glad Zapata's life, and music,  had a chance to be in the spotlight again. #miazapata #vivazapata #thegitsband #thegits #miazapataforever

RIP Kenny Rogers

Sad news tonight, as Kenny Rogers, a country music legend and icon of my youth, passed away yesterday.  He was 81.

My Mom was a huge fan and Rogers' 8 track was ubiquitous in our flat. At some point early in my youth, well before I was ten, my parents took me to one of his concerts. I only remember a fleeting second of the show, but I'm glad I went.

I also remember the whole family going to see his movie SIX PACK in 1982.

Anyway, rest in peace sir. You made many lives better with your music.

Sneaky Snake

St. Adalbert peeps - do you remember this LP from Sr. Virginia's 1st grade classroom? I've been singing "Sneaky Snake" since 1980 LOL and was overjoyed to find a copy of the record today at a thrift store.

What A Wonderful Gift!

The Bookends went thrift store shopping tonight and returned with two presents for their ol' Dad - an LP of The Glenn Miller Story and a wonderful album of 78's of Bing Crosby, circa (I believe) 1934. Hot dog!
