On this day in 1887, the village of Bay View was sadly absorbed into the City of Milwaukee. #WeShallRiseAgain

Smiley Got his Driver's License

No test because of Covid, crazy times! I’m confident in his abilities however, just a bit in shock that I’m now a mother of three licensed drivers! How’d that happen?! - Lisa

The Centennial of the Harding Presidency

100 years ago today, Warren Harding was inaugurated as President. Even after a century his reputation is largely that of an incompetent surrounded by crooks, but that is a falsehood historians have been trying to rectify for years.

The "Tea Pot Dome scandal" seems to have been partially a frame up, as in retrospect it turned on the word of a now- known perjurist. And many of the "truths" about the era, from a distance, appear as blatant political attacks. Harding was an adulterer and Prohibition wasn't exactly taken seriously under his Justice Dept, but c'est la vie.

Here's what is not in dispute: Harding spoke out for Civil Rights and vigorously, if unsuccessfully, pursued a federal anti-lynching law (FDR, for the record, opposed one as President.) He negotiated a successful naval treaty, released political prisoners taken under Wilson, expanded the nation's use of radio, was the first President to visit Canada, established the Budget Office that is still in use today, and got the country out of a Recession through the use of said Budget Office.

Not a great President. But not a bad one either.

Happy Anniversary President Harding!

Truth

"Her/His/Your truth?" No, that makes it opinion.

 Truth is not malleable.

How History Would Have Changed

In May of 1786 a farmer and his three young sons were planting corn on their farm in what was then western Virginia (now KY) when they were attacked by a party of Native Americans.
The father was killed instantly. The oldest boy, age 15, sent one of his brothers to get help from their neighbors, while he himself ran to their cabin for a rifle.
Now armed, the boy was alarmed to see his youngest brother, only 8 years old, being hunted by the war party. Taking aim at a silver pendant around a brave's neck, the boy shot and killed him, allowing his brother the time to escape.
It was a scene that was hardly unusual, occurring thousands of times over the course of this continent's history.
What makes it special is what happened 25 years later. That 8 year old, who so nearly vanished from history that day in VA, would honor the father he saw murdered by giving his own son his late father's name:

Abraham Lincoln.

On This Day

On this date in 1844 a 12" gun on the USS Princeton exploded as the ship was sailing on the Potomac River, killing Secretary of State Abel P. Upshur, Navy Secretary Thomas W. Gilmer and several others, including David Gardiner, the father of Julia Gardiner. Because widower President John Tyler was infatuated with Julia, he was down below deck with all the ladies. Had the President not been with her, he would surely have been killed as well; and since he did not have a VP or an established line of succession, a Constitutional crisis would have erupted.

A & J Polish Deli

📍 A & J Polish Deli

My favorite place to buy Polish treats. Not pictured is their deli counter and freezers, where you can buy pierogi, meats, and cheeses. Affordable deli- last photo is my haul. - Yaya

[note: this is a favorite stop of mine before every big holiday. I stock up on fresh white kielbasa, chrzan (horseradish), and the like. Junie likes the place too.]

Where's The Lie?

For anyone who enjoys crafting or watching craft videos: are there any people to follow who do modern/boho/eclectic things? I miss crafting but all I ever see on my feed is cows, roosters, farmhouse, etc. That’s great if that’s your thing but I would love to see something different! - Lisa

30 Years

Today marks 30 years since the ground campaign of Desert Storm began under the command of H Norman Schwartzkopf.

Iraq boasted an army of 1 million men, the 4th largest in the world, comprised of battle hardened veterans of a decade of war with Iran.
The inexperienced Coalition troops that opposed them numbered 750k.
Despite these facts, which had contemporary American pundits alarmed, the outcome was never in doubt. Within four days Kuwait was free and 42 of 50 Iraqi divisions lay in ruins, mauled by what has aptly been called the perfect example of B-krieg warfare.
To all who served, and to the late Gen Schwarzkopf and President HW Bush, I tip my hat in gratitude.
